Ingredients for the Best Chicken Cheesesteak
This recipe uses simple ingredients to make a great sandwich:
- Chicken – Chicken breast makes the perfect protein for this sandwich.
- Veggies – We use a classic combination of mushrooms, green bell peppers, and onions to make a filling, flavorful sandwich.
- Cheese – An authentic cheesesteak is made with provolone cheese, but you can also use mozzarella, american, or Swiss cheese.
- Bread – Hoagie rolls are the classic roll for making an authentic Philly cheesesteak.

Substitution Recommendations:
- Can you use chicken thighs instead of chicken breast? Chicken breast has the best texture for a sandwich, but you can use chicken thighs when in a pinch.
- The best cheese for a cheesesteak? When making a cheesesteak sandwich, the cheese you choose matters. You want to pick a cheese that melts beautifully over the filling, and while provolone is a classic choice, mozzarella is another great option.
- What bread is best for Philly cheesesteaks? A hoagie roll is the classic bread choice for a cheesesteak, but you can also use an italian sub roll. The key is a long “loaf-like” bread.
Valentina’s Expert Tips:
- Prep ingredients. The key to a delicious cheesesteak sandwich is to slice everything thinly and into equal-sized pieces. This way, each bite is packed with a mix of chicken and veggies.
- Don’t overcrowd the pan. Cook the chicken in batches if cooking a large batch, so it browns rather than steams. A hot skillet gives the sandwich much better flavor and texture.
- High heat saute. Cooking the protein and veggies over high heat for a short time gives the filling a great flavor and a smoky finish.
How to Make a Chicken Cheesesteak

- Prep chicken and veggies. Thinly slice the chicken breasts and set aside. Chop up the veggies into thin slices.

2. Cook veggies. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat with oil and butter. Add the mushrooms, peppers, and onion, and cook until slightly tender. Remove from the skillet and set aside. In the same skillet, cook the sliced chicken until fully cooked through. Add the vegetables back to the pan.

3. Melt cheese. Lay the provolone cheese over the chicken mixture, cover with a lid, and let the cheese melt.
Toast bread. Slice and lightly toast the hoagie buns until golden, then spread mayo on both sides. Assemble. Fill each bun with the cheesy chicken and vegetable mixture. Close the sandwiches, slice, and serve warm.
