What Kind of Beef Do You Use for Philly Cheesesteak?

For cheesesteak sandwiches, choose thinly sliced steak. Shaved beef is a convenient option that delivers the perfect cut with minimal effort. You can also use sirloin or a ribeye, and slice it thinly.

Slider Variations

If you aren’t a fan of Philly cheesesteak, here are some other options for a delicious game day slider!

  • Ham and cheese: Load up the buns with ham and lots of cheese to create the best ham and cheese sliders.
  • Burger sliders: You don’t need to make burgers to have your very own mini cheeseburger sliders!
  • Spicy Buffalo Sliders: A creamy Buffalo chicken filling is the perfect protein for sliders! You’ll be asked to make these buffalo chicken sliders again and again!

Valentina’s Pro Tip:

For perfectly sliced meat, freeze the beef for approximately 10 minutes. Freezing the meat slightly provides stability, making it easier to achieve uniform slices.

6. Bake. Place the tops of the rolls on and brush with butter. Cover with foil and bake for 15 minutes. Remove foil and bake for 5 more minutes until golden and melty.

Helpful Recommendation:

  • Perfectly cooked meat: Ensure the pan is hot before adding the beef—you want a good sizzle, not a steaming sound.
  • Easy-cut bread: Slice carefully so the top and bottom layers are even.
  • Melty cheese: Keep an eye on the sliders in the oven to ensure the cheese melts completely.

Store & Reheat

  • Storage. Store leftovers in a tightly wrapped container and refrigerate.
  • Reheat. Warm up the individual sliders in the air fryer or toaster oven for a crisp and melty sandwich!
  • Freeze. We don’t recommend freezing these sliders.

These philly cheesesteak sliders make the best game day appetizer, or a fun entree for the family! Soft and buttery Hawaiian rolls, packed with juicy steak and veggies, topped with melted provolone.
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 35 minutes
Total Time: 45 minutes
Servings: 12 servings

Ingredients

  • ¾ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp ground black pepper
  • ¾ tsp ground paprika
  • ¾ tsp garlic powder
  • 3/4 lb beef sliced thinly
  • 1/2 red pepper thin strips
  • 1/2 green pepper thin strips
  • 1/2 onion sliced
  • 12 oz Hawaiian buns
  • 4 oz mushrooms sliced
  • 8 slices provolone cheese
  • 3 Tbsp mayonnaise
  • 2 tsp oil
  • 2 Tbsp unsalted butter
  • butter spread ingredients:
  • 3 Tbsp unsalted butter melted
  • ¼ tsp italian seasoning
  • ¼ tsp garlic powder

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, combine the salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder for seasoning, and set aside.
  • In a large skillet, heat 1 teaspoon of oil and 1 teaspoon of butter over medium-high heat. Season with half of the seasoning blend.
  • Add the beef to the hot pan and saute until almost fully cooked.
  • Remove the meat from the pan and add another tsp of oil and butter. Add the sliced peppers, onions, and mushrooms to the pan. Cook over medium heat until tender, but not so soft that it becomes mushy.
  • Add the meat back to the pan and season with the remaining mixture.
  • Slice the Hawaiian rolls lengthwise and add the bottom buns to a casserole dish. Spread the mayo on the bottom half of the sliders.
  • Spread the meat and veggie mix on the bottom buns and top with sliced cheese.
  • Add the top buns onto the sliders.
  • In a small bowl, mix together the butter spread ingredients. Brush the top of the rolls with the seasoned butter.
  • Cover with foil and bake at 375°F for 15 minutes. Uncover the dish and bake for an additional 5 minutes.
  • Cut the sliders into individual pieces, serve, and enjoy!

Notes

  • When cooking the meat, ensure the pan is heated to a medium-high temperature. When you add the steak, you want to hear that sizzle; otherwise, the steak will steam instead of searing.
  • When slicing the bread, be careful to cut evenly through the middle. Otherwise, you may have a top or bottom that’s too thin.
  • When baking, ensure the sandwich is cooked until the cheese is nicely melted.
  • Store leftover sliders in the fridge, tightly wrapped. To reheat the sliders, air fry the individual sandwiches until toasty and melted.
