Hot Seafood Appetizers-

Oh, how I love canapés as an appetizer. They are great for parties or just to enjoy as a side or brunch. These have such a wonderful balance with the cheese, crab, shrimp, and jalapenos which adds great flavor. Once baked the bread gets crunchy and everything is so creamy it just melts in your mouth, a wonderful experience I tell you.

(P.S. This is an older recipe I created a video for.. Hope you are enjoying our short videos.)

Step by step pictures on how to make hot seafood canapes.

How to make Seafood Appetizers-

  • Slice french bread.
  • Combine all of the ingredients for the seafood appetizer mixture in a bowl.
  • Spread the mixture onto the bread slices.
  • Bake until bread is crispy and the cheese and mixture is fully cooked.

Can I make seafood appetizers in advance?

These canapes (open-faced sandwiches) are wonderful to prepare in advance.  Slice the bread even up to one day in advance if you are making these for a party.  Prepare the mixture and keep covered and refrigerate, then, just mix before baking.

I like to make a recipe and have these for my husband for breakfast for a few days. They are easy to make in the morning when you are pressed for time. The mixed mixture will keep refrigerated up to 3 days.

Can I freeze the leftover seafood mixture?

Yes! The mixture freezes great. Just partially thaw the frozen mixture before baking and add 2-3 minutes to cook time to the original bake time.

  • 4 oz crab meat
  • 1 cup chopped ready shrimp
  • 1 large jalapeno
  • 2 Tbsp scallions (or green onion)
  • 6 cherry tomatoes
  • 2 Tbsp dill
  • 1 cup shredded cheese

  • Dash of salt, pepper and cayenne pepper
  • 1 french bread loaf
  1. Slice French bread into about 22-24 slices.

I am making these at work and we do not have an oven so I was thinking of putting it in a small crock pot to keep it hot. Do you think this would work?

    • admin 03/10/2017, 1:22 pm

      Hi Caroline,
I have never tried it that way, but I am sure that would work. All that needs to happen is that the mixture becomes really warm. If you have a toaster there, you could also toast the bread slices so they become slightly crunchy or you could even serve them without toasting. Hope the slow cooker works out and you get a ton of raves!. 🙂

    • Mary Jo 02/01/2018, 10:20 pm

I mixed everything up, put in to the crock pot on low and it was amazing.

      • admin 02/02/2018, 11:02 am

That is pure genius, Mary Jo. Now you’ve inspired me to make this for the big game! 🙂

1 cup of shredded cheese. What kind can I use? I would like to stuff avocado halfs with this mixture.

    • admin 02/19/2017, 10:49 am

You can use any cheese you like, Rose. Mozzarella is great, four cheese or provolone. Stuffed avocado halves sounds fantastic! I’d love to hear how they turned out. Enjoy.

Hi Christina, I’m sorry, I probably worded that wrong. Cooked shrimp that is ready to eat, not raw..☺☺ You’re in for a treat. These are soooo good…

  • Tanya 06/08/2015, 12:52 pm

Hi Valechka! These look and sound absolutely delicious! I do have a question, with Jalap. pepper, do these canapes have a bite or are they spicy? Thank you.

    • admin 06/08/2015, 1:13 pm

Oh they really are good, I think you will like:). If you chop the jalapeños into really small pieces (like as small as you can get them) you won’t be able to feel them, they will just add flavor but not too spicy. Kind of like a little kick to it. If you do want spicy though add more than a dash of Cheyenne pepper:)..
