Ingredients for Buttermilk Crispy Sandwiches

  • Chicken breast – boneless skinless chicken breast works perfectly for this recipe. You can also use chicken thighs!
  • Marinade – buttermilk, salt, and pepper. 
  • Breading – flour, cornstarch, salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  • Toppings – your favorite toppings.
  • Buns – you can toast them or leave them as they are!

How to Make Crispy Chicken Sandwich Recipe:

This buttermilk chicken sandwich is so easy to make. The prep time and cook time is under 30 minutes (minus the marinating time).

  1. Cut the chicken breast into two to make two thing cutlets. Use a meat mallet to beat the cutlets into an even thickness.
  2. In a bowl, combine the marinade ingredients and add the chicken cutlets to the marinade. Let the chicken marinade for at least 30 minutes.
  3. In a bowl, combine the ingredients for the breading. Take the chicken cutlet and allow the excess marinade to drip off. Dredge the chicken generously in the flour mixture so that all of the sides are covered. Press the breading into the chicken lightly. 
  4. In a large pot, heat oil and heat to 350°F. Add the chicken cutlets gently into the hot oil and fry on both sides for 3-4 minutes per side. If the pot is too small, cook one cutlet at a time. Once golden brown, remove from the heat and allow the oil to drain by placing the cutlets on a wire rack.
  5. Build the sandwich: Lightly toast your buns, add a thin layer of mayo to the bun, add the chicken cutlet, finish with your favorite toppings, and enjoy!

  • Freeze. You can freeze the fried chicken patties for a quick sandwich! Arrange the fried chicken cutlets on parchment paper and into a ziploc bag. Arrange in a single layer and freeze for up to 3 months. Reheat:  Add the chicken patty to a preheated oven at 350°F. Warm for 12-18 minutes, depending on the thickness.

    • 1 cup buttermilk
    • 1 tsp salt
    • ¼ tsp ground black pepper

    Instructions

    • Cut the chicken breast half giving you 4 chicken cutlets. Beat chicken with a meat mallet so it's even in thickness.
    • In a bowl, combine the buttermilk, salt and pepper. Add the chicken fillets into the buttermilk, allow to marinate 30 minutes or overnight.
    • Mix together all the ingredients for the breading.
    • Take the chicken from the buttermilk marinade and dredge in the flour mixture.

    • In a Dutch oven or large pot with a thick bottom, add enough oil to completely cover chicken breast when submerged. Heat until oil is about 350°F.

    • While chicken is frying, prep all the toppings. Assemble sandwich.
