Classic Stroganoff
Stroganoff is a classic European dish made with beef cooked in a sour cream sauce. Our classic beef stroganoff is a family staple, and this ground-beef version is a cheaper option! Don’t love beef? Make our creamy chicken stroganoff, there’s a stroganoff for everyone!
Ingredients for Ground Beef Stroganoff
- Ground beef – Lean ground beef is the perfect protein for this recipe, making this dish affordable and high-protein!
- Mushrooms – Baby bella mushrooms, or white mushrooms, are the key to a delicious stroganoff.
- Sauce base – Like any delicious sauce, this sauce starts with a roux. A butter-and-flour base thickens the sauce and adds rich flavor.
- Liquid – Beef broth and Worcestershire make this sauce extra rich and flavorful.
- Sour cream – You can’t have a classic stroganoff without sour cream! The sauce turns out beautifully balanced and creamy.

How to Make Ground Beef Stroganoff
Easiest step-by-step recipe:
- Cook beef. Heat the oil in a large skillet, then add the ground beef. Break up the meat with a meat masher as it cooks.
- Vegetables. Add the chopped onions and sliced mushrooms to the pan. Season with salt and pepper and cook until tender.
- Roux. Add butter and flour to the pan, whisking until no clumps remain.
- Sauce. Stir in the chicken broth and Worcestershire, and bring up to a low simmer. Turn the heat down and whisk in the sour cream.
- Serve and enjoy, friends.
Expert Tips:
- Brown the beef. For the best flavor, brown your ground beef before adding it to the sauce. This adds extra depth of flavor.
- Don’t skip the veggies. The mushrooms and onions add so much flavor; don’t skip them!
- Serve immediately. For the best flavor and texture, serve the stroganoff immediately after cooking.

Serving Suggestions
- Pasta: Serve the stroganoff over wide egg noodles for an authentic pairing. Cook noodles in a large pot of boiling water until al dente. Serve the creamy sauce and meat mixture over the top, and enjoy!
- Potatoes: Homemade mashed potatoes taste incredible when topped with ground beef stroganoff and that rich sauce.
Store & Reheat
- Storage. Store leftover stroganoff in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Reheat. Warm up leftovers in a pan until reheated. Serve over fresh pasta and enjoy.
- Freeze. We don’t recommend freezing stroganoff, as the liquid and cream sauce can separate.
