Ingredients for a homemade burgers.

Toppings for the Best Hamburger Recipe:

  • Cheese: Have your pick between american cheese, cheddar cheese, colby jack cheese, or pepper jack cheese.
  • Vegetables: Load your burger up with your favorite toppings! You can add lettuce, tomatoes, onion, pickles, or pickled jalapenos.
  • Burger sauce: Though we love ketchup, bbq sauce, and mayo, a homemade sauce can’t be beat! Our honey mustard sauce is the perfect sweet sauce. A copycat chick fil a sauce tastes just like the real thing. We like our avocado ranch sauce as a dressing, but it also tastes incredible on a burger. A garlic aioli sauce is a simple and classic sauce that brings a great flavor in a more subtle way.

Substitutions and Variations:

All the add-ins, substitutions, and variations to the recipe you want to make.

  • Gluten-free alternative: Ditch the bun and enjoy your burger in a lettuce wrap. Iceberg lettuce makes the perfect wrap because of the circular lettuce leaves and the crisp texture.
  • Healthier protein: Use ground turkey or chicken for a healthier patty alternative!

Burger Seasoning Recipe:

We love seasoning our burgers inside and out for maximum flavor. A combination of onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper adds so much flavor to the burger patty. Mixing the seasoning into the meat is our secret to the best flavor.

The seasoning along with a good sauce can truly transform a burger.

Make the burgers on the Stovetop!

Don’t have a grill? No problem! Cook these burger patties on a cast iron skillet for that perfect crust. You’ll want to cook them for about 10 minutes on medium to high heat, flipping half way through.

Cook Burgers Like a Pro:

Get the perfect burger every time with these expert-level tips.

  • Pick the right meat. It’s important when making burgers to pick ground beef with some fat. 80/20 or 85/15 are ideal. Most fat will melt and drip down since the burgers are being cooked on the grill. Picking a lean ground beef will result in a dry, hard burger.
  • Keep your meat cold. Keep the remaining meat in the fridge when forming your patties, as it’s harder to shape when warm.
  • Don’t be shy with the seasoning. Season your meat thoroughly to give you the most flavorful patty.
  • Let the burgers rest. After the burgers are cooked, let them rest for a few minutes before digging in. This helps the burger retain all those juices.
  • Level up your burger. Make your homemade burger loaded by topping the patty with caramelized onions!

Can you eat the burger at medium rare?

It’s all up to personal preferences!

Can you use lean ground beef?

When should you add cheese?

If you want cheese on your burger, add it to the burger when assembling the toppings. If you want your cheese to be melted, add the sliced cheese to the flipped patty. Cover with a grill cover and let the cheese melt.

Store & Reheat

  • Storage. Leftover patties are perfect for storing in the refrigerator. It’s better to keep leftover patties separate from the burger bun to prevent a soggy burger.
  • Reheat.
  • Freeze. You can freeze the patties raw or uncooked! Thaw in the refrigerator overnight. If you are cooking raw patties, grill as needed. You can reheat on a skillet for a crisp crust if you are reheating cooked patties.
