Ingredients for a Classic BLT Sandwich

All you need are a few simple ingredients:

  • Bread – Your favorite sliced bread is all you need for a BLT.
  • Avocado spread – Homemade avocado spread adds so much to the sandwich, adding a great flavor and moisture.
Swap: While we love mashed avocado in this sandwich, you can also use sliced avocado for a simple avocado BLT.
  • Tomatoes – Sliced heirloom tomatoes are a must in a BLT. Since a BLT uses a short list of ingredients, you’ll want to pick ripe, and flavorful tomatoes.
  • Bacon – Cooked bacon strips make the perfect easy protein for this sandwich.
Pro tip: We love using our air-fryer bacon method for the easiest, mess-free cooking.
  • Lettuce – Crispy, fresh lettuce adds the crunch this sandwich needs. We use iceberg, but romaine may be used.

The Best Sandwich Bread for a BLT

When it comes to a BLT, you can go as simple as your favorite white bread from the store, or make sandwich bread from scratch

Does a BLT Have Mayonnaise?

A classic BLT usually features a layer of mayo, which we swapped for a creamy avocado spread. This spread provides moisture and richness; the sandwich doesn’t need mayo on top of that. However, if you choose to skip the avocado spread, a layer of mayo is a must for a moist sandwich. You can even use a homemade garlic aioli for an extra flavorful spread.

Best BLT Sandwich Variations

This sandwich is simple, but it doesn’t have to be! Here are some delicious BLT variations you’ll want to try:

  • Turkey BLT: Extra protein never hurt anybody, and you can bulk up this sandwich with sliced deli turkey for a delicious turkey BLT.
  • BLT club sandwich: Just like our classic club sandwich, you can stack this BLT high with toppings. An easy way to make this sandwich impressive and extra flavorful.
  • Spicy BLT: Add pepperjack cheese, jalapeños, and a spicy mayo dressing to this salad for a spicy BLT you are sure to love.
  • Chicken BLT: Just like our chicken pesto sandwich, you can bulk up this sandwich with chicken and, even better, fresh basil pesto!

Valentina’s Pro Tips:

  • Pick the right bacon. Use thick slices of bacon for the best texture in a homemade BLT.
  • Perfect tomatoes. When it comes to a BLT, every ingredient matters, and a ripe, flavorful tomato really shines.
  • Toast bread. Though optional, toasting the bread makes the sandwich extra delicious and gives it the best texture.

How to Make a BLT Sandwich

The easiest sandwich to make from home:

  1. Toast bread. Lightly toast the slices of bread if desired (highly recommended). You can do this in a skillet or toaster oven.
  2. Avocado spread. Prepare the avocado spread in an airtight container and set aside.
  3. Assemble. Spread the avocado mixture on both sides of the bread, then layer with tomatoes, bacon, and lettuce.
  4. Serve. Close the sandwich, serve, and enjoy!

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Toast bread. Toast the bread slices if you prefer them toasted (we do).
  • Make avocado sauce. Prepare avocado spread in a container and store in the fridge until ready to use.
  • Assemble. Spread the avocado sauce on both sides of the bread slices. Top with tomatoes, bacon, and lettuce.
  • Serve. Close the sandwich, serve and enjoy, friends.

Notes

  • Avocado spread: Swap avocado spread for mayo or homemade garlic aioli
  • Choose quality bacon. Thick-cut bacon gives a homemade BLT the best flavor and crispy texture.
  • Use ripe tomatoes. Since a BLT has simple ingredients, a juicy and flavorful tomato makes a big difference.
  • Toast the bread. Toasting is optional, but it adds extra crunch and helps give the sandwich the perfect texture.
